33rd Fighter Squadron

Using the Squadron Forward campaign guide written by Joseph Legan, I began a Feb 1944 campaign following a P-38G squadron around the timeframe of Big Week. Officially, they’re designated as 33rd Fighter Squadron, 20th Fighter Group based out of Kings Cliffe, UK. Unofficially, they’re known as the Dragons!

They’re led by veteran pilot Maj Oliver “Fire” Stanton, a corrupt chap who’s motivated by the acquiring of wealth. The Director of Ops is Capt Clarence “Chew” Cobb, a veteran, albeit lazy, pilot who believes in the cause.

The first flight is commanded by 1Lt Virgil McCarthy, a cheery veteran from a military family, who looks to improve his position. His flight is composed of 2Lt Carl Mills, an optimistic sprog who’s up from the ranks. The second element leader is 2Lt Joel Combs, a pilot of privileged background, a bit of a conformist. The final pilot is 2Lt Bobby Price, a cocky pilot, out to kill the Huns.

Second flight is led by 1Lt Dan Holcomb, a naturally gifted pilot and an optimist. He believes his skills will see him promoted rather quickly. Following him is 2Lt Jack Lawrence, a sensible family man. The additional element leader is 1Lt Dakota James, a mean spirited pilot from a military background, always looking to promote himself. His sharp vision may come in handy despite his poor attitude. Lastly, there’s 2Lt Dean Hawkins, a self righteous and greedy man.

All of these men were rolled up via tables in Squadron Forward, a supplement written for all types of WWII air games, but certainly works well with Bag the Hun. It looks like 33rd FS will be called to action soon, so be prepared for an After Action Report!
